Bubble Tea Literary is an independent literary magazine that aims to spread awareness through writing and art. The name of the magazine was created through a love for boba (from Taiwan!) coupled with a passion for writing and all things related to the arts. So, we encourage all boba lovers, writers, artists, and anyone and everyone to submit to our opportunities!

PLEASE READ THROUGH ALL THE DIRECTIONS, GUIDELINES, RULES, AND DESCRIPTION OF EACH POSITION BEFORE APPLYING! PLEASE ALSO READ EACH QUESTION CAREFULLY IN THE APPLICATION AND ANSWER WITH AS MUCH DETAIL AS POSSIBLE AND TO THE BEST OF YOUR ABILITY!

PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL OF THESE POSITIONS ARE UNPAID, UNLESS YOU WISH TO REQUEST VOLUNTEER HOURS! ALL POSITIONS ARE VIRTUAL/REMOTE WORK!

Application Process/Timeline:

• Application form

• Review/judging process based on application form (round 1)

• Decisions sent out for round 1 (including rejections and those notified to move on to round 2)

• Those who pass round 1 will be requested to sit through a casual interview/chit-chat (round 2)

• Final decisions/review process based on round 2

• Final decisions sent out for those accepted/rejected

Application Guidelines/Rules:

• ANYONE is welcome to apply regardless of gender, sex, age, experience level, country/location, but you MUST speak/write English.

• You MUST have an Instagram handle as communication will be made through there and through email.

• There are limited spots to each position, so if you get rejected, please do not be too upset as we can only accept a very small number of applicants.

• Portfolios are REQUIRED for applying to become a staff artist, staff poet, graphic designer, or general submission reader. Content creator applicants will NOT be required to submit a portfolio, but will be asked specific short-answer essay questions. All position applications will include REQUIRED short-answer essay questions and short-answer questions for applicants to fill out!

• Please note that you WILL be EXPECTED to work and contribute consistently as a staff member and be good at communication. There will also sometimes be online staff meetings on Zoom or Google Meet. IF YOU DO NOT THINK THAT YOU WILL HAVE THE TIME COMMITTMENT OR DEDICATION TO WORK HERE, PLEASE DO NOT APPLY!

• You can only apply to ONE position (listed below), meaning you can only apply ONCE to this application form!

BEFORE APPLYING, PLEASE FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH OUR MAGAZINE TO DETERMINE IF YOU WILL BE A GOOD FIT FOR BUBBLE TEA LITERARY! You can also read our published issues here: Issues.

Positions Available:

• Staff Artist (including photography and comics): Staff artists will contribute 1-3 pieces for each issue in their specific medium (you will be requested to specific which medium you are applying for in the application!). (Please keep in mind that the art pieces submitted will still be reviewed and discussed first among staff before being greenlit to be published. However, a staff artist is guaranteed to have at least on piece published per issue.) Most of Bubble Tea Literary's issues will have a specific theme, so staff artists are expected to create at least ONE on-theme piece for each issue. If a staff artist is submitting more than one piece for an issue, then the other one/two pieces do not have to be on-theme.

• Staff Poet: Staff poets will contribute 1-3 poems for each issue. (Please keep in mind that the poems submitted will still be reviewed and discussed first among staff before being greenlit to be published. However, a staff poet is guaranteed to have at least one poem published per issue.) Most of Bubble Tea Literary's issues will have a specific theme, so staff poets are expected to write at least ONE on-theme poem for each issue. If a staff poet is submitting more than one poem for an issue, then the other one/two poems do not have to be on-theme. 

• Graphic Designer: Graphic designers will help create/design Instagram posts and help with designing the website. YOU MUST HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH USING DESIGN APPLICATIONS AND TOOLS SUCH AS CANVA (FOR E.G.)!!! Graphic designers should also make themselves familiar with the theme and aesthetic of Bubble Tea Literary to ensure that everything they create is cohesive with the magazine and true to its branding and mission.

• Content Creator (Instagram reels and posts): Content creators will help create Instagram reels to promote and market the magazine and its opportunities. (Other ideas and creative freedom for creating Instagram reels will also be accepted as long as it is discussed and reviewed with the EIC first! This includes reels that are not focused on promoting/marketing the magazine and its opportunities, but are related to the literary and arts world in order to entertain Instagram users, or are trends.) Content creators will also be expected to help brainstorm Instagram post ideas and communicate with the EIC first so that the graphic designers can be talked to. YOU WILL NOT BE REQUIRED TO SHOW YOUR FACE/FULL BODY IN REELS/POSTS IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO!

• General Submission Reader (prose and poetry): Readers are the first staff members to read through submissions in their specific genre (you will be requested to specify which genre you are applying for in the application!) and provide commentary to the EIC on each piece, including advice/reason(s) on whether a piece should be accepted or rejected. Readers will also be expected to discuss certain pieces with the EIC on occasion.

This project will result in the production of print editions of the anthology in which we will distribute to underserved communities and centers in Asia and in America, including schools, hospitals, orphanages, senior centers, etc. So, please be very mindful of the content you submit!
